| | | Today is World Food Day—a day when we are encouraged to live out Christ's call to feed the hungry and care for our neighbors. With 673 million people worldwide still suffering from hunger, we are reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew 25:35, "For I was hungry and you gave me food." On this day, you can make a difference in the lives of our sisters and brothers by urging Congress to maintain robust funding for food and poverty relief programs, including Title II Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole Food for Education. | | | | | |
| |
| Here's how these programs work: | | | | | Title II Food for Peace sends U.S. food aid during emergencies. But it also invests in long-term solutions. In addition to distributing bags of U.S.-grown grains like sorghum and corn or other food staples like vegetable oil, it helps communities learn to farm and lift themselves out of extreme poverty. | | | | | | McGovern-Dole Food for Education provides U.S. food for school meals to impoverished communities globally. This lunch and literacy program has boosted student attendance and instruction quality. Students now have access to books, food and clean water. They're learning to read and practice hygiene, gaining knowledge that supports their growth at school and at home. | | | | | | |
