View Online IMMEDIATE RELEASE Readout of Secretary Hegseth's Meetings With Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing May 30, 2025 On May 30, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth met separately with Singapore Prime Minister Wong and Minister for Defence Chan in Singapore on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue. He reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral defense relationship and the key role that Singapore will play in U.S. efforts to re-establish deterrence in the Indo-Pacific. The leaders exchanged views on the regional security environment and the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. They discussed commitments to expand U.S. naval and air force asset rotations in Singapore, in line with the 1990 Memorandum of Understanding Regarding United States Use of Facilities in Singapore, in order to enable the United States to maintain peace through strength. Finally, Secretary Hegseth expressed U.S. commitment to continue to support top-notch training for Singapore Armed Forces in the United States.
